BUDDING tennis players have an ace opportunity to get involved in a new scheme driven by the popularity of Wimbledon.

Saddleworth Tennis Club, is one of nine organisations across Greater Manchester which will be taking part in special Tennis for Kids sessions organised by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

The scheme was launched last week by inspirational coach Shikira Walker, from MCRActive in Fallowfield, who led one of the first events in Alexandra Park, Moss Side, alongside a group of 30 schoolchildren.

Speaking after the first session, Ms Walkder said the sessions would give all young people the chance to get involved in tennis.

“It’s really important that kids get the same opportunities to give tennis a try regardless of their background or where they live," she said.

"There’s a whole range of free and low-cost programmes across the city and Tennis for Kids is one that gives children the chance to get active and have fun at the same time.

"I get a real buzz from getting kids who perhaps might not have thought tennis was for them giving it a go and having fun trying it.”

Paul Bennett, head of LTA North added: “We share Manchester’s vision to tackle physical inactivity in the city particularly when it comes to children and young people.

"Affordable tennis activities like Tennis for Kids delivered in a fun way by inspiring coaches who understand their communities can play a huge part in this.

"Seeing the MCRactive team of community coaches on the court giving what was for many of the children, their first experience of tennis was fantastic."

Tennis for Kids sessions are now avaiable at Saddleworth Tennis Club, Calf Lane.

Children who take part will get their own kit with a special racket & ball set and a personalised t-shirt all for £30.
