OLDHAM Council has today (Monday, September 9) paid tribute to those who have lost their lives working for the emergency services with a special flag raising ceremony.

The event saw a number of people come together on the steps of the Civic Centre for the poignant mark of respect.

Those in attendance included the mayor of Oldham, Cllr Ginny Alexander, Oldham’s Youth Mayor and a range of representatives from blue light services from across the town.

The mayor said: “Our emergency services help to keep us safe and do an amazing job at it.

“It is important we remember the sacrifices these public servants make, often working long and unsociable hours to help to protect all of us.

“It’s also important to remember that there are a number of emergency service men and women who have lost their lives and been badly injured in the line of duty.

“Today we remembered them and, in our own small way, say thank you.”

The flag will fly throughout the day above the Civic Centre.
