GREENFIELD'S Anne Watson was celebrating after being named the annual Woman of Oldham at the organisation's charity lunch.

Retired teacher Anne was named winner of the coveted title at the event at the White Hart in Lydgate.

She was presented with a rose bowl and flowers by Woman of Oldham chairperson Eileen Cooper.

Eileen said Anne had worked tirelessly for many years in various voluntary organisations.

She has worked with WRVS, running an emergency training team delivering meals to the elderly until it closed, collecting clothes and distributing them to the needy families.

"Anne organised a holiday scheme for children coming to stay in the area with local families," said Janet.

"When war broke out in Kosovo, she led a team of volunteers looking after the refugees on a daily basis for several months whilst their stay in Oldham, this was all voluntary work.

"She also worked at the Contact Centre in Oldham helping families that has broken down to see their children every week. "She is involved with the Unity Project for the Asylum Seekers and has been deputy Manager at the Oxfam shop in Oldham for 20 years. While doing this still finds time to help out with the ward trolley at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

"Anne is a very worthy winner."

It is the second accolade this year for Anne after she received a national award for her voluntary service at charity Oxfam’s shop in Oldham over 20 years.

The presentation was made at the charity's 26th annual luncheon.

The committee have raised more than £142,000 since their first event.

This year's charity is "Insprire Women", an Oldham charity which continues to empower women and change lives of the better.

Some 180 guests enjoyed a three-course lunch and guest singer Alan Burton, who got the party started with his "fabulous voice and great songbook".

The final fundraising event of the year is a Christmas Cracker flower demonstration by Kathleen Williams on Saturday, November 23 at Grotton Pavilion from 2pm to 4pm.
