Bolton's best and worst secondary schools revealed based on this summer's GCSE result

The government has released its provisional 'league tables' showing how well individual schools performed based on a number of measures.

Overall children in Bolton continue to make below average progress in secondary school as they did last year.

The tables released today by the department for education are not as detailed as the full secondary performance tables, which are issued in January.

But provisional results are issued to give parents an indication of individual schools perform as they choose a high school for their child.

Figures show that 40.9 per cent of children achieved a strong 5-9 grade in English an maths, an increase on last year but below then national England state-funded schools score of 43 per cent but in line with the England all schools score of 39.8 per cent.

They also showed that 30 per cent of pupils were entered for the English Baccalaureate ­— made up of English, maths, sciences, a language and either history or geography GCSE ­— compared to 40 per cent overall nationally.

The number of young people staying on in education or going into work stood at 93 per cent slightly lower than the national average.

Bolton Attainment 8 score was of 44.5, in line with last year, was lower than the national average of state schools, which stood at 46.6.

Attainment 8 is an average score across eight subjects taken at GCSEs, which includes English and maths. The higher the score, the better.

Post-16, only 4.2 per cent of A-level students gained three straight As or better, compared to a North West average of 9.7 per cent and a national average of 12.3 per cent.

Eight per cent achieved AAB or better, compared to a North West average of 16.8 per cent and a national average of 20.3 per cent.

BEST PERFORMING SCHOOLS

BOLTON Muslim Girls School was the best performing state-school in both progress pupils make and the high grades they leave with.

Young people at the school made well above average progress during their years there and 68.9 per cent left with top grades in English and maths.

The only two other schools in which children make well above average progress are Eden Boys School and Sharples School.

Eden Boys was placed second for progress and results and Sharples School third for the progress pupils make and fourth in the borough for the numbers achieving 9-5 grades in English and maths

Caroline Molyneux, deputy headteacher of Sharples School said: "We are delighted with our 2019 results, our Progress 8 score of 0.52 places us in the top 15 per cent of schools nationally and is yet another year of improvement.

"To be the number one community school in Bolton is recognition of the hard work and effort that our students and staff at Sharples put in every day."

Essa Academy in Great Lever was celebrating good results, with young people making above average progress, which places it in the top 20 per cent of schools nationally for progress.

Principal, Martin Knowles said: “This is wonderful news and another great step on our journey to outstanding.

"Progress measures highlight how much progress students have made on their five-year journey at secondary school.

"The partnership between students, staff, parents, carers and Bolton Council means our students achieve better than their peers nationally.

"These results are incredible and I am very, very proud. To be in the top 20 per cent of schools is truly remarkable!”.

Although at Kearsley Academy, children were said to make below average progress, their results ­— 52.5 per cent of pupils leaving with strong passes in maths and English ­— placed them fifth in the table.

For the numbers of children achieving top grades, the top three places are taken by faith schools, with Canon Slade being placed third in this category.
