A COUNTRY village Facebook page has declared itself a “politics free” zone in the run up to the General Election.>

Dobcross News, which provides a fast-paced daily news service across Saddleworth and beyond, announced the decision after the country’s main political parties revealed they would focus on social media in a bid to attract voters.>

But Ken Bennett, the Facebook site administrator is an ex-Fleet Street senior news executive, who launched a successful award-winning free monthly newspaper seven years ago and freelances for regional and national and international media.>

He said: “Important grassroots issues will continue to dominate Dobcross News site.”

Bennett, a journalist for 63 years, added: “Politics are a personal choice. Our group is about the welfare of our Facebook family and championing their concerns.>

“These range from speeding traffic, safety in their homes, local education and protecting our countryside. A burst water main takes priority over politics - something MPs may need to remember. Political battles can be fought elsewhere.”>

Dobcross News, a private group launched more than a year ago, has nearly 2,000 “discerning members” and focuses on breaking local news and quality information.
