EMERGENCY services were scrambled to a major Bradford building site this morning amid reports that a man had fallen and become trapped.

The incident happened about about 8.30am at the Conditioning House development, on Cape Street, off Canal Road, Bradford.

A police spokesman said they received a call from the ambulance service at 8.35am to reports of a man trapped in a lift shaft.

He was extracted by fire crews after receiving a facial injury that was not described as life-threatening.

At the height of the incident, at about 9am, four ambulances, five fire engines and two police cars were seen on site along with the Yorkshire Air Ambulance which landed at Forster Square Retail Park at about 9am.

The man, believed to have been working on site, is understood to have become trapped under a weight. He was taken away by ambulance.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: "We received a call for an incident at 8.26am on Thursday, December 5, on Cape Street in Bradford.

"We sent a number of resources to the scene and one patient has been taken to Leeds General Infirmary."

The former wool testing facility, which once processed 70% of all wool produced in the UK, is currently being redeveloped by the Priestley Group into 150 apartments, offices and commercial space.

Rob Pell, head of construction at Priestley Construction, said: “There was an incident at our Conditioning House site in Bradford on Thursday 5 December involving a member of the site team.

“We can confirm that a subcontractor has been injured and was taken to hospital by the emergency services.

“We are working closely with all involved to ascertain what has happened and can provide further comment once we know more.”

A Health and Safety Executive spokesperson said: "HSE is aware of the incident and is making initial enquiries."
