A HIGHWAYS worker and musician from Bolton has found fame — as the unlikely star of a political advert in which he meets new Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

David Barnard, who works in highways maintenance, is seen in the commercial being interviewed about why he voted Conservative for the first time in December's General Election.

He is asked in the clip what he would say to Boris if he was there — before being surprised by the new PM who appears from behind a black curtain.

David says in the advert: “My mum and dad were both Labour voters, as was the majority of my family so I’ve always grown up with the impression that Labour was the party for the working man so going against that would almost be betraying who I was or the sort of area that I came from.

“I want to be able to have my own business I want to be able to work hard and get rewarded for that and it really felt like the Conservative party was really speaking to what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be in the next five to ten years.

“The Conservative Party seems to be giving everyone an equal opportunity, everyone gets given the same chance and whatever you do with that chance is up to you and that to me is what it should be.”

The Bolton News:

David, who says he voted to leave the EU, said that he felt the Labour Party was ignoring his vote when it came to the EU, and was looking forward to seeing what Boris was going to do with the chance he’d been given to help people in the North.

The local lad looked shocked to see Boris, shaking his hand multiple times and even posing for a selfie with the PM in the clip.

He told the Conservative leader that he liked the first speech after the latest election where Mr Johnson described the northern vote as “rented”.

The pair were shown engaging in a few minutes of conversation, exchanging thoughts about Brexit and the productivity of the North, with the Prime Minister saying: “Brexit is just the beginning, I think what people voted for was change.

“Now it’s about infrastructure it’s about education, and technology to bring the whole country together.

“Imagine what would happen if you unleash that potential.”

Boris Johnson’s Facebook page commented on the advert saying “Had a lot of fun meeting David! This is what it’s all about. Take a look.”

David replied on the post saying “Was lovely meeting you too Boris”.

The advert, which is the party’s first since leaving the European Union, was released on social media on Wednesday night and was also shown on TV.
