CONCERNED walkers have been warned not to call 999 over fires on the moorland above Saddleworth and Tameside today.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) issued an alert to let people know the fires are planned and controlled.

The area has been ravaged by blazes in the last few years and a banning order is in place stopping people from setting fires.

But, fires seen today are not thought to be a danger.

A spokesman for GMFRS, said: "We are aware of controlled burning taking place on moorland in the Tameside/Saddleworth areas.

"‪Please do not be alarmed and please do not call 999 unless it is an emergency."

In 2018, the Saddleworth Moor fire of June 24 saw flames spread across an area of seven sq miles (18 sq km), joining another blaze at Winter Hill.

The fire was so large that fumes even spread to the Irish Sea.
