NHS bosses have suspended all patient visits for mental health wards as part of their response to the coronavirus crisis.

Bosses at Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust have curtailed access to their units at the Royal Oldham Hospital, among others.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson tightened public restrictions on travel and movement last night.

A Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust spokesman said: "As the situation with coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to escalate, we've suspended all visits to patients on our wards.

"We're sorry about this, but need to keep everyone as safe as possible.

"We know that it is important to keep in touch with family and friends, so please do use the telephone and social media to stay in contact.

"Our staff are here to support and care for your loved ones as well as support others working in the ward. We appreciate your understanding at this time."
