BOLTON School old boy Professor Michael Waring inspired the next generation of scientist when he returned to the town.
The Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at Newcastle University gave a masterclass to sixth form students in the boys' division before delivering a lunchtime seminar to chemistry students and pupils interested in medical sciences in both schools.
During his visit, the professor highlighted the key contribution that chemistry makes to the discovery of new medicine.
In a Q&A session Professor Warning spoke about his careers party including his work at the Newcastle University Centre for Cancer and at at AstraZeneca.
A spokesman for Bolton School said: "Professor Waring told students that Bolton School is a great place to learn chemistry and that it will give them a superb grounding in the subject.
"He recalled how his own teachers had inspired him."
