TRIBUTES have been paid to a stalwart of junior cricket in Lancashire who has passed away aged 97.

Oldham man Bob Stamp, who died on Monday, March 23, was involved with the development of young cricketers in Lancashire over five decades and was a former chairman of Lancashire Schools Cricket Association (LSCA).

He initially became involved with the Oldham Schools Cricket Association before joining the LSCA as a selector where he worked tirelessly for the development of the game and its players.

He became chairman of the LSCA in 1989 and then from 1993 through to 2002. During this latter period his presence was vital to help steer the county through a period of great change in the way Age Group Cricket was administered.

Paying tribute, former LSCA secretary John Heaton, said: "Bob's influence was appreciated by all, both on and off the field, in the boardroom and on the cricket pitch.

"His presence as chairman until 2002 and in the years since when he has been able to attend and watch cricket at Emirates Old Trafford was inestimable.

"He was there when a speech was required, he was finely tuned as to when the sun passed over the yard arm, along with a humour that was unique.

"Due to the current problems with funerals, only close family will be able to attend. Bob’s son Ian has indicated he would hope to arrange a gathering later in the summer, possibly at Emirates Old Trafford. This would be a splendid opportunity to remember Bob and his contribution to life and cricket."
