ANGELA Rayner MP has been be named as the deputy Labour leader after winning the third round ballot.

Ms Rayner, who is the MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, was elected to the position ahead of Tooting MP Rosena Allin-Khan and Leeds East MP Richard Burgon.

She will now join Sir Keir Starmer, who has been elected Labour leader, in leading the national party.

It comes as Ms Rayner has been self-isolating in recent days, after showing symptoms of coronavirus.

In a video acceptance statement shared on her Twitter page, she said: "I never expected to accept the deputy leader [sic] of the Labour Party filming on my mobile phone, while confined to my house.

"But we are in extraordinary times and I am now recovering from coronavirus, and it has been a struggle.

"But I know that I am one of the lucky ones, and my thoughts are with those who are still struggling now or will have lost loved ones.

"I want to thank everyone who took part in this election, my fellow candidates, our party staff, and all those who have supported me through the campaign — and especially my team and my family.

"I promise that I will do everything I can to repay your trust.

"Things have changed dramatically in our country, but our values remain the same, and more important now than ever, we must now reflect on those values, standing up for public services and for a society in which people work together and look after one another.

"Together we can rebuild our labour movement and reconnect with our communities right across Britain who need our support now more than ever.

"And we will hold the Government to account when it falls short for the people of this country.

"To be your deputy leader is a dream come true that I still can't believe is quite real.

"Being given the opportunity to serve the party that had done so much to ensure a fairer world, opportunity for all, and created the foundations of a modern society that we are all now so relying on during this pandemic — I cannot put into words my pride today.

"Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for the faith you put in me and now let's take the next steps together."

The election of Ms Rayner and Sir Keir has been welcomed by Oldham MPs Debbie Abrahams and Jim McMahon.

Ms Abrahams tweeted: "Huge congratulations to Keir Starmer the newly-elected UK Labour leader & Angela Rayner the new deputy leader. And a massive thanks to the 100s of 1000s of actvists who campaigned for you both. Now onwards!"

Mr McMahon also tweeted his congratulations to both the new leader and deputy leader, adding: "Best of luck Keir Starmer today from your friends in Oldham. You and the amazing team have run an outstanding campaign and it's been an honour to be part of it."
