REBEL day trippers ignored Government orders to stay at home and tried to gain access to one of Oldham’s favourite beauty spots.

But their plans were thwarted by a special security team guarding entrances to Dovestone Reservoir last weekend, backed by a police presence.

GMP Saddleworth and Lees sent a reminder the reservoir at Greenfield was closed, adding: “Please stay away this weekend. Stay at home, protect the NHS and if you are going anywhere else practice social distancing and help stop the spread of Coronavirus.”

But despite the plea there were reports dozens of motorists turned up over the two days only to be turned away.

And the visitors' attempts brought an angry backlash on social media from furious Saddleworth residents. One summed up local feelings saying: “I can’t believe travellers are still trying to have a day out here when it’s obvious the area is closed.

“Don’t they understand they should simply stay at home?”

And the lockdown currently remains in place and over Easter weekend with United Utilities and the RSPB underpinning the ban and police saying only site residents will be allowed to walk the area. The agencies stressed they will continue to work with police regarding security plans.

Paula Steer is United Utilities’ director responsible for health and safety management. She said : “We’re sorry to be doing this as we know these sites are enjoyed by so many and it’s not a decision we’ve taken lightly.

“We really need to think about the well-being of everyone in our communities at the moment, and that means avoiding unnecessary travel or close contact with those outside your household.

“These are difficult times, but they won’t last forever. We look forward to reopening the car parks and welcoming everyone back to our estates as soon as the official advice changes.”

An RSPB spokesperson said: “We have been routinely turning people away so they have not gained access to the site as it is closed. That will continue.”

A spokesperson for GMP, said: “Fixed penalty notices are already being issued when necessary. We are following national guidance so our initial approach is to engage with members of the public, explain the restrictions and encourage them to do the right thing.”
