A WOMAN has replicated her grandfather’s journey home from WWII by rowing 66 miles.

Hazel Whittle and partner Cheryl Dean each rowed 33 miles to raise money for Bolton Hospice, who cared for grandpa Ken Hill in the last few weeks of his life.

The pair have raised over £820 for the charity in Mr Hill’s memory, as the hospice cared for him after he was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Miss Whittle said: “We’re made up about it, I put in £250 because I thought we might be able to raise that much and then I suppose because we did it over three days and shared it on social media, more and more of our family and friends saw it and donated.

“We’re not rowers so it was quite a challenge, it was really hard but absolutely worth it.

“My grandpa was such a humble person, family was everything to him, and he always spoke about how amazing the care he received from the hospice was.

“We just wanted to do something in his memory, and for a wonderful charity who I know needs our money more than ever during these difficult times.”

Mr Hill worked on Spitfires during WWII, maintaining the aircraft all over Europe.

In 1945, he made the final journey from Dieppe to Newhaven, to return home after the end of the war.

The duo each rowed half of the length of the trip over the three days. Visit justgiving.com/fundraising/Hazel-Whittle3 for more information and to donate.
