The boundary wall of a mosque has been severely damaged after a car crashed into it today.

A silver car lost control and ploughed into the boundary wall of the Markaz E Ahlebait mosque, in Fletcher Street, at 11:30am this morning.

Witnesses said the driver of the vehicle, a male, fled the car before emergency services arrived.

The owner of the shop next to the mosque, Bolton Discount Domestics, who wished to remain anonymous, said he heard "a very loud bang" at 11:30am.

He said: "It's completely destroyed the wall.

"I called the person who runs the mosque straight away.

"It was nearly an hour before anyone came after we called the police."

Firefighters from Bolton Central fire station were first on the scene after they were alerted to the incident by police around 11:45am.

The Watch Manager confirmed that the car was safe and not blocking the road, causing no disruption to traffic.

Greater Manchester Police were approached for more information.
