RESIDENTS near to Greenacres Cemetery say they are at their wits end with water cascading through their gardens whenever there is heavy rain.

Families in the 20-year-old detached houses in Burghley Avenue have videoed water flowing downhill from the cemetery through their properties and say they longstanding problem has apparently been ignored by council chiefs for almost a decade.

Rob Scholes said his bag garden is "like Niagara Falls" whenever it rains.

He explained: "Our gardens back on to Greenacres Cemetery in which a tarmac path was installed about 10n years ago.

"When it rains, due the lack of adequate drainage and blocked drains, the water hurtles down the path and channels the water like river into our gardens causing all kinds of damage.

"I have been calling and emailing Oldham Council about it for years. I ended up with some response from Unity Partnership in 2016 still nothing done apart from promises to do something when I do manage to speak with someone.

"I am really cheesed off now with the total lack of interest and action from the council."

Rob's neighbour is Elizabeth Shaw-Frost whose partner is Paul Bradley.

Elizabeth said: "The water runs right across the garden and gets really deep and runs across the road.

Donna and Daniel Minton have lived on Burghley Avenue for four years and have been plagued by the flooding ever since they moved in.

Donna said: "The water runs into the garden and down the drive every time it rains heavily. I'm half expecting a dead body to be washed into the garden one day. It's an awful problem.

"We're lucky that it doesn't come in the house. I rang the council and they said they would call me back but they never did.

"This can't be doing the foundations of our property any good. It's making an absolute mess."

An Oldham Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the ongoing issue at Burghley Avenue and plans are currently being worked on to resolve this issue.”
