A VOLUNTEER effort swung into action when dozens of tyres were dumped close to an Oldham beauty spot.

The industrious Countryside Safety Marshall volunteer team, who help to protect Dovestone Reservoir, were joined extra helpers in a massive flytipping clear- up operation at the nature haven.

They worked with seven members of Dovestone Women's Institute and representatives of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds to clear tyres dumped at Binn Green, off the main A635 Greenfield to Holmfirth Road.

The mission, carried out over two days, saw the team collect and dig out more than 120 tyres from forest and the undergrowth and stack them up. The operation was hampered by the tyres being weighed down with stagnant rain water and the team battling against swarms of midges.

In the second phase, one team worked hoisting tyres up by a hook and pulley system while the others worked on the roadside, stacking tyres on the pavement before they were despatched onto a recycling truck.
