WORK has begun to clear the site for the new £27 million Saddleworth School at Diggle this week.

Interserve, the contractors, say they will establish themselves on the village site with material deliveries beginning to arrive from Monday, August 3.

A spokesman said: "Interserve works are all within the boundary of the site from the brook onwards. Unity Partnerships are working direct for the local authority to complete the entrance road to the site and any local highway works.”

The expectation is the school will be finished in February, 2022 and the new school project secured by the company this year after being named preferred bidder for three new schools in the West Midlands.

The existing Saddleworth School has been identified as not fit for purpose. The new school will be designed to accommodate the growing needs of both pupils and the local community and it will be tailored to meeting and exceeding the needs of modern school education provision.

The new school will offer an additional 150 new school places and when complete, it will accommodate up to 1,500 students aged 11 to 16.
