SAM Jafarian and his partner Chelsey Dhillon are taking on the challenge of climbing Wales’ highest mountain to support humanitarian work in crisis-torn Yemen.

Sam, 27, and Chelsey, 22, live in Wilmslow, and are looking to climb Mount Snowdon in north Wales on Sunday, August 30.

Joining them will be Sam’s younger cousin, 18-year-old Adam Chowdhary, and the challenge will be the first ascent of a mountain for the trio.

They will be raising money to support UNICEF’s work in Yemen, where 80 per cent of the population are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance.

The coronavirus is spreading rapidly in the country, its health facilities are struggling and millions of children face the threat of malnutrition.

The Snowdon fundraiser is the first charity event staged by Sam and Chelsey, and they hope to reach the summit of the 3,560-foot mountain in time to see the sun come up.

Sam said: “One of Chelsey’s friends did it, and she started really early in the morning, so when she reached the peak she watched the sun rise above the clouds.

“So we’re looking at starting the climb up at 2am, and should get to the top by about 6am when the sun comes up.

“The reason we’re doing the climb is that we’ve had quite a lot of adversity in our lives and thought of giving back a little bit.

“We decided to do something out of our comfort zone while at the same time donating and helping a great cause.

“The situation in Yemen is getting worse, so every little bit helps, and 100 per cent of the money we raise will be donated to UNICEF.

“We had a £1,000 target initially, but raised £2,000 in two hours and raised the target to £10,000 to see how much we could get.

“I’ve never climbed a mountain before, and am not looking forward to the blisters the next day.

“But I’m really looking forward to the scenery and the challenge of doing something different.”

Sam set up an online donations page for the fundraiser, and the total currently stands at £2,935. He thanked everyone for their support.
