A FORMER member of the WRAF will celebrate turning 100 today with friends and family.
Jean Sugar was born in Bradford but lived in Prestwich from 1926 until she moved to Regency Care Home in Whitefield last year. Her grandfather, Thomas Race, was a police sergeant locally.
She served with the air force at Heaton Park, where she met a young Richard Attenborough, as part of the RAF Film Unit, remembering him as a "charming young man".
Jean later became personal secretary to the divisional manager at British Rail. Away from work she was captain of St Margaret's women's bowling team. Her late husband Alfred, who worked at Bletchley Park, also lived to be 100.
