SCORES of Saddleworth villagers have responded with affection and nostalgia to news a legendary emporium is to close.

The outpourings came when Frank and Doreen Bradbury announced their retirement from Franky Fine Buys, their shop on Uppermill High Street.

The couple have served the community more than 30 years and their ground floor premises were open house for thousands of men, women and generations of children seeking personal gifts, novel accessories, household and electrical goods.

The couple plan to shut up shop on Wednesday, October 21 and Doreen said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by messages and kindest from everyone.

“We have had a regular stream of customers, all observing social distancing, who’ve just come in the shop to wish us well and a happy retirement.”

Frank said: “It’s lovely how folk have responded. The messages are very touching.”

Taking to social media villagers praised the couple for their outstanding range of goods.

One said:“Frank and family has given an excellent service to Saddleworth for a number of years. I still have Christmas lights that still work for the last 25 years and cost £2.49. And if you could never get it Frank could.“

Another added: “There isn’t a person under 40 who grew up in Saddleworth who doesn’t know who Frank is ...”
