THE Roxy was one of its kind in Hollinwood.

The cinema opened on December 20, 1937 screening the film “Fire Over England” starring Flora Robson, Raymond Massey, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh.

Seating was provided in stalls and circle levels for 1,406 and there was a cinema cafe.

In 1978 the cinema was split into two screens, then in 1981 it became a three screen cinema.

Further sub-division occurred to create six screens which seated:470, 130, 260, 260 320 and 96.

In 1998 a seventh screen was added and in 2002 the Roxy received a £100,000 upgrade.

The Roxy closed in 2005 when the owner retired and was demolished in 2007.

Some of our readers said they remember the usher who had the nickname ‘Lurch’.

He was a character at the cinema and we would love to hear your memories of him.

What are your memories of the cinema? Did you go to watch anything in particular? Did you have a first date there?
