THE legendary “Yanks are back in Saddleworth” jamboree, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary, is due to take place in August.

Delighted organisers say, subject to government guidelines, the spectacular will be staged on Saturday and Sunday, August 7 and 8.

The main event will be at Saddleworth High School, High street, Uppermill, and there is a plan for a fly past by a Battle of Britain memorial aircraft.

The yearly event celebrates the filming of “Yanks”, a 1979 drama directed by John Schlesinger and starring Richard Gere, Vanessa Redgrave, William Devane, Lisa Eichhorn and Tony Melody.

The film is set during the Second World War in Northern England and focuses on relationships between American soldiers stationed in semi-rural England and the local population during the build-up to Operation Overlord (the D-Day landings in Normandy) in 1944.

It features three romances between US service personnel and local women to exploring the effects of the cultural differences between the brash "Yanks" and the more reserved British population.

Scenes were shot across Saddleworth and The Swan Inn in the centre of Dobcross was highlighted. Actress Lisa Eichhorn revisited the pub to share a re-run of the film at a special showing for locals.

Organisers are inviting owners of military or civilian vehicle from the 1930s-1950/60s to display it at the school or take part in the Sunday parade on August 8.

And in celebration of their remarkable service, they are inviting members of the NHS and North West Ambulance Service to join the parade round the villages.

Among the dignitaries taking the salute will be the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of the county, and the Mayors of Oldham and Saddleworth.
