TESTING of a different kind got underway at Oldham secondary schools today as they began to welcome back all their pupils after schools were closed as part of the third national lockdown.

The Hathershaw College, like other schools across the borough, had a 'testing station' in place to administer the lateral flow covid tests — and thanks to a whole school effort the operation ran smoothly.

The school, like other secondary schools, is bringing back all year groups over the course of the week so testing can be carried out.

Schools have been open throughout the pandemic for children of critical workers with other pupils learning remotely.

Today the school gates open for Year 11 students at The Hathershaw College and although putting in plans for the quick fire coronavirus tests was testing in itself, say senior teachers, the incredible organisation by those staff involved meant the new term "had a really smooth start".

Teachers praised pupils who took to the testing with "real maturity".

Mark Giles, Principal, said “As a result of a real team effort, students return from today to our classrooms which is the best place for them to learn.

"To test well over 1000 students three times each over the next fortnight is a huge logistical exercise, but it will help to keep them, their families and our staff safe as well as lead the way for them moving to the sustainable home testing option.

"The highlight of today has been seeing students back in classrooms making progress with their peers and teachers.

"Let’s hope this is the final enforced closure of schools as young people have been affected massively by the disruption.”
