ANGELA Rayner, MP for Ashton and Failsworth and Labour’s deputy leader, led the Oldham tributes following the death of the 99-year-old Duke of Edinburgh.

She said: “Prince Philip truly embodied the values of public service that we all hold dear and cherish.

"He dedicated his life to our country - from a distinguished career in the Royal Navy during the Second World War to his decades of service as the Duke of Edinburgh.

“As we mourn his passing, my thoughts are with the Queen and her family on this very sad day. Rest in peace HRH Prince Philip.”

Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon said: "HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was a steadfast support for Her Majesty over decades of loyal service.

My prayers and condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and his family.

Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Debbie Abrahams posted on Twitter: "My sincere condolences to HM the Queen, the royal Family and all their friends."

Barbara Beeley, chair Saddleworth Parish Council, said:”For my generation, the Duke of Edinburgh was always there, supporting the Queen and highlighting and making a difference in areas which he saw as important.

“He campaigned about wildlife and the planet and he helped young people through the very successful Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

"He was sometimes criticised for being outspoken and yet that, and his support for his family proved him to be a warm and sensitive human being.

“I am sure that the councillors and people of Saddleworth join me in sending sincere condolences to the Queen and all members of the Royal Family on this sad day.”
