EXCITED students left their own inedible signatures on a new multi-million state of the art school ... all in a good cause.

They had been invited by the construction team to write their names and messages on the steel structure of the new Saddleworth School being built at Diggle.

And Phil Shaw, divisional director of construction company Tilbury Douglas, who organised the event, said: “Signing the steel frame is a great way for the students to leave a legacy.

“We are delighted to be delivering this long-awaited facility providing an improved learning environment for the students. Thank you to the team that have worked collaboratively to get to this milestone.”

The ceremony was watched over by the schools head teacher, Mike Anderson, Alice Rea, chair of governors and Ángela Reece of the community and operations team.

The school’s head boy, Jack Sinfield, and head girl, Bella Cook, both aged 16, put their names and a message on the steel with special pens.

They said they were so pleased to visit the new school to see the fantastic opportunities available for future students of Saddleworth.

“It will be a great addition to Saddleworth with outstanding sporting facilities for members of the local community and groups to use,” they said.

They were accompanied by School Council representatives (All Year 7) Chase Fernandez, IIaina Evans, Khai Suggett, Jane Anderson, Matilda Campbell-Dye,all Year 7 who were visiting the new school site for the first time.

Kabir Salihi, senior project manager showed the pupils around the site, highlighting key areas including outdoor learning space, dining hall with terraced area outside and outstanding new facilities for Sport, Drama, Music and Art .

The signing took place before the next phase of work begins to commemorate the new build and fantastic facilities of the new school.

Mr Shaw and Mr Salihi were accompanied by Colin Dowell, contracts manager and Emma Ryan, senior quantity surveyor.
