Firefighters battling the blaze at Marsden Moor with 15 engines and back up crews say the moors should be avoided at all costs.

The change in wind direction has caused flares in hot spots and Kirklees are sending in a team of rangers to help.

More than 100 acres of fragile moorland has so far been lost to the flames since the fire broke out on Sunday evening.

A helictoper, costing the National Trust £2,000 an hour, is helping douse flames.

Craig Best, the National Trust countryside manager, praised and thanked the farmers, voluntary services and  locals for all their help and support.

It is believed a man who told West Yorkshire police he accidentally set fire to the moors with a firework will not face criminal prosecution but could be face proceedings under local authority legislation.

And the in meantime, residents living near the scene have been supplying firefighters with food and drinks.
