In September 1916, when only London was protected from airship raids, a Zeppelin dropped 21 bombs on Bolton.
They targeted an area of crowded terraced houses built for handloom weavers at the foot of Deane Road, a site now mostly covered by the University.
Kirk Street suffered the worst damage and 13 people were killed. This picture shows residents surveying the damage to their homes
