THE leader of the Oldham Council, Arooj Shah has encouraged residents to celebrate Gypsy, Roma and Traveller month.
In a recent statement on Facebook, Cllr Shah wrote: “Our borough has many rich and diverse communities, which is what I really love about my hometown.
“June is Gypsy, Roma and Traveller month 2021. I’d like to encourage people to celebrate and learn more about this event as it will help to tackle prejudices and challenge myths.”
The statement which appeared within a Facebook post by the page I love Oldham, has received more than 100 comments and sparked debate among Facebook users.
To mark Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month this July campaigners are calling on councils to “make space” for Gypsies and Travellers to stop in their area.
Teachers are meanwhile being urged to “make space” in their teaching to focus on the histories, cultures or present realities of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities and the media is being asked to make some space in TV and film for “authentic portrayals” of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people.
