THE Oldham Council Music Centre has re-opened its doors to musicians for weekly face to face rehearsals.

The centre, at the Lyceum on Union Street, Oldham is welcoming students and new members to join in with the musical groups that take place every week.

Members are invited to sing and play in bands, choirs, and orchestras at the centre.

Councillor Shaid Mushtaq, cabinet member for education and skills, said: “The last 15 months have been a challenge for everyone, none more so than for our young people. They have missed out on so much.

“Thankfully, the Music Service has continued to provide online services as we know being part of singing classes, playing an instrument or music making can have a really positive impact on mental health and wellbeing.

He added: “Playing an instrument is a great hobby to have and can also help boost a child’s confidence levels and transform their entire educational career.”

Due to current social distancing rules, there have been a few changes made to the inside of the building but the team at the Music Centre have promised the alterations “won’t stop the music”.

The Oldham Council Music Service supports the musical aspirations of all young people living in the borough (in and out of school), and engaging people of all ages in a variety of musical activities.

The service has been rated ‘Outstanding’ in the Federation of Music Services evaluation programme and is a founder member of the GM Music Hub, a music education partnership.
