A former Oldham Athletic footballer has been convicted of firearms offences after weapons were found in his home.

Paul Shepherd, who played for the club in the early 2000s, had his home raided after a National Crime Agency investigation.

The 43-year-old was found to have a Glock semi-automatic pistol and a Howa bolt action rifle as well a 200 round of ammunition as his home in Leed in April last year.

He had earlier been stopped in his car and officer found a block of cocaine in his vehicle.

The investigation began when an encrypted phone and drugs were found at his home.

Messages on the phone linked Shepherd to the firearms and led to further arrests and raids in north east England, Merseyside and West Yorkshire.

At Leeds Crown Court Shepherd was found guilty of four charges relating to possessing a firearm and Class A drugs after a three day trial.

National Crime Agency Operations Manager, Nigel Coles, said the weapons would have been used to "threaten and intimidate others."

He said: “Shepherd went to great lengths to acquire dangerous firearms that were criminally sourced.

“We’re pleased that the evidence presented at court this week has secured a guilty verdict and hope further charges can be proven at a later date.

“The seriousness of gun crime cannot be underestimated. Had we not intercepted these weapons they would have been used to threaten and intimidate others with the potential loss of life.”

The National Crime Agency revealed they were looking for another man in connection with the incident.

Mr Coles added: “We are still seeking one other man involved in this investigation.
