A MAN was rescued after falling in water at a beauty spot in Saddleworth.

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team members were sent to a spot in Birchen Clough after receiving a call by police.

After a short search of likely spots, the casualty was located close to a waterfall.

The team's casualty carer assessed the man and said he may have possible spinal injuries. Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team also attended.

Due to the potential seriousness of his injuries, a helicopter was requested from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

The casualty was then flown to Greenfield Reservoir for transfer to a waiting ambulance.

An Oldham Mountain Rescue Team spokesman said: "Huge thanks to the passers-by who administered immediate first aid and stayed with the casualty until help arrived, and also to Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team, who we contacted to assist with the helicopter landing site."

Eighteen Oldham team members and eight from Holmes Valley were present for three hours and 40 minutes after being called at around noon on Wednesday.
