A MASSIVE fly-tip has been dubbed ‘absolutely minging’ by an MP after items including garden fencing, a microwave and a toilet seat were dumped by the River Tonge.

Litter Picker Andy Capstick had first spotted the fly-tip over two weeks ago, and has since been working with volunteers to clear up the rubbish.

Mark Logan, MP for Bolton North East, visited the site which he described as unlike anything he’d seen during his time as MP.

He met with Andy along with litter picker Eileen Crowe to discuss the fly-tip last week, and filmed a video calling for more action to tackle the issue.

Mr Logan said: “I’m down here on the edge of the River Tonge and it’s absolutely minging.

“I haven’t seen anything like this in the whole time I’ve been MP for the last year and a half and I’ve seen some bad pile ups of litter.

“I’m here with Andy, who you will all know in and around Astley Bridge for all the work he’s been doing.”

Andy said: "We’ve got fridges, flooring mattresses, we’ve got tyres, garden fencing.

“We’ve got a Now That’s What I Call Music CD, there’s James Blunt on it, and Heather Small with Proud - well I’m not proud of this.

“There’s food packets, ladders, over there there’s a nice metal bathroom heater

“There’s also a microwave, a set of drawers, boxes, pallets, and it goes right down the riverbank because I spied it here two weeks ago on the other side and it’s into the river.”

Mr Logan added: “And a toilet - well at least a toilet seat.

“Andy and the team of litter pickers including Eileen have been spending years and years trying the best they can to help tidy up the town but we need more support than ever.

“So I will be working closely with Bolton Council and also the environment agency to make sure we can get this place tidied up and get more enforcement happening so we don’t have so many eyesores across the town.”
