A MEMORIAL to those who have lost their lives to coronavirus in Oldham is under consideration, the council's deputy leader has confirmed.

A full council meeting on Wednesday heard a question from the member of the public, Maggie Scarisbrick, asking if a memorial was planned.

Cllr Amanda Chadderton said that it was, but that its exact form has not been decided.

She said: "I can confirm Oldham Council will be doing something to commemorate those who have sadly lost their lives to Covid over the last 18 months.

"We are currently looking at options, and something will be announced in due course."

There is already a national memorial on Albert Embankment in London, opposite Westminster, in the form of tens of thousands of hearts painted on a wall – each one representing a life lost.

Only a few days ago, The Guardian reported that the bereaved are calling for the memorial to be restored and preserved as it starts to fade in the sun and rain.

However, this is not an official memorial, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson announcing the creation of a 'commemoration commission' in May this year.

It is not known when the commission will come up with a memorial of its own.
