A MICROBREWERY has been granted permission to serve alcohol to the public at its new home despite objections from concerned residents.

Donkeystone Brewery has been based at Boarshurst Business Park in Greenfield since 2017, serving beer in a "tap room" with a premises licence.

After tasting success with its manufacturing of popular ales and beers, it is moving to a larger premises in the centre of Greenfield, just behind Tesco on Wellington Road.

In its application, the brewery said: "We wish to continue to operate on and off sales of alcohol to the public through our tap room and retail shop.

"As well as being a great place to be able to enjoy our range of crafted beers, our tap room has been a haven for local families and walkers to relax and socialise with other like-minded craft beer lovers and we wish to continue to offer such a space in our new premises."

After the plans were issued, several residents expressed their worries.

One said: "As a resident of Knoll Street, I have concerns about an increase of crime and disorder if the proposed rear access gate is added to the property.

"Intoxicated people will leave Donkeystone into a dark, ill-lit path.

"Given the seclusion of the path, this will lead to urinating, broken bottles/glasses, gathering of youths/people, anti-social behaviour, damage of property and vehicles and an increase in litter."

Other similar objections were raised.

The fire service also wrote to the council over the safety of the building.

But the concerns have been taken into consideration in a number of conditions which Donkeystone has agreed to follow.

All customers must leave the premises by 11.30pm and "consumption of food or drink by customers outside the building shall be restricted to between the hours of 9am and 8pm and shall be restricted to the area adjacent to the south western façade of the building only".

Recorded music will not be allowed to be played between 11pm and 8am.

"Management must undertake regular door checks to ensure no noisy disturbances take place outside", one condition states. But if there are problems, procedures must be followed.

The application was approved by the council's licensing committee on Tuesday.
