A CRICKET club is set to find out if plans to change its premises licence will be approved after attracting a mixed response from residents.

Shaw Cricket Club wants to extend its hours for serving alcohol and add licensable activities such as playing live music and showing indoor sporting events.

At present, the Mark Lane club serves alcohol Monday to Friday from 6pm to 9.30pm and 12pm to 10pm at weekends.

The club has requested to have its bar open Sunday to Thursday from 11am to 11.30pm and 11am to 1.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Greater Manchester Police, environmental health and the licensing service made representations when the plans were lodged but they have been withdrawn after the club agreed to follow a raft of conditions.

A total of 62 representations have been made from residents with 38 objecting to the proposals and 24 speaking out in favour.

One resident said: "Even with the current licensing laws, we are subjected to lots of noise from the cricket club but even more so when they are leaving and loitering on the lane behind our house.

"We have had glass bottles and glasses and many forms of rubbish thrown over our fence in our back garden and it is only through sheer luck that it has not harmed one of us."

Another added: "This variation opens up a significant opportunity for the club to bring disturbance to what is essentially a quiet residential neighbourhood. This has recently been the case when a number of events have been held at the clubhouse.

"This has given rise to the doors and the windows of the club being opened and people singing and shouting on the raised balcony on the front of the clubhouse."

But there is plenty of support for the club.

One person said: "Having the venue available for events that naturally conclude later, such as weddings and other social occasions such as charitable, events would be a real force for good. The Shaw community and the club have always been very family focused and allowing these events will help maintain that focus, while keeping the local economy thriving."

The application for a variation of the club's licence certificate is set to be decided by the council's licensing panel tomorrow, Friday.
