A MAJOR hole on the junction of Thornley Park Road and Station Lane has been fixed after a “frustrating” three and a half month wait.

Grotton residents have finally seen repairs completed on the collapsed section road after an ardent campaign by resident David Sawford and Liberal Democrat councillor Sam Al-Hamdani.

Cllr Al-Hamdani reported the sunken section of road to the council back in June after being alerted to the damage by Mr Sawford.

Mr Sawford said the hole was “extremely dangerous” and had caused a “number of near crashes with cars travelling simultaneously in the opposite direction on Thornley Park Road”.

The council came under pressure to complete the works after losing an apparent responsibility row with United Utilities who said they had not been told about the work and that the job was listed under the council.

In a statement Cllr Amanda Chadderton, deputy leader and cabinet member for neighbourhoods said the council had visited the site and “made the area around the defect safe” ahead of starting repair works on October 18 following investigations from utility companies.

Cllr Sam Al-Hamdani said the work was completed “within days” of him going to press with the issue.

He said: “I’m glad that – finally – when the right person at the council got hold of it, they managed to get the repairs sorted really quickly.

“There’s a real issue with all kinds of problems that seem to fall between different organisations or people, whether that is highways, the utilities companies, the Environment Agency or even individual landowners.

“Really all anyone wants is for the problem to be fixed, but all too often, works are getting stuck between people saying that it’s not their problem."

He added: “In this case, the council have got the work done – and if they can prove that the problem was caused by one of the utilities companies, then they will have to pick up the bill for that.

“It’s immensely frustrating that it took this long to get to that point. I think it’s crucial that everyone remembers that the most important thing is to fix people’s problems. The longer that organisations spend arguing over responsibility, the longer the annoyance for people. Let’s just get things done.”
