A car was stolen from a property in Chadderton over the weekend when a home was broken into and car keys were taken.

Derek Atherton woke up in his home on Norwich Avenue at 4AM on Saturday morning and went down stairs to find the back door had been broken into, a drawer was open and his car was missing.

The thief had managed to break into the house while Mr Atherton and his wife slept upstairs by using a crowbar to snap the lock on the back door, before taking off with Mr Atherton's car, a set of his wife's car keys and a house key.

When discussing if either the police or the car manufacturer, Peugeot, would be able to find the car, Mr Atherton said: "Nobody seems to be able to tell if they can or can't."

Despite having strong locks on his back door and a steering lock on the driving wheel, the thief went off with the car and Mr Atherton admitted the chances of him getting his car back are "slim" and that the ordeal has been "frustrating".

Mr Atherton believes that the thief knew what they were doing and was well versed in the act of committing a bulglary.  Crimes of this nature have become more common recently.

He has said car manufacturers should be responsible for installing trackers inside cars and that doing so "would kill the industry" of car thefts. Although his number plate has been flagged up for automatic recognition, he still has little hope his car will be found.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed the report of a burglary and theft of a motorvehicle, adding that no arrests had been made.

Mr Atherton had taken plenty of precautions to keep his house safe and prevent his car from being stolen, but he said thieves "keep finding ways around these things".

Mr Atherton's car is a Peugeot 508 Estate, Reg PE21 DXZ. Anyone with information should contact police via 101 or our LiveChat at www.gmp.police.uk quoting incident 628 of 23/10/21. Information can also be passed via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
