A SADDLEWORTH councillor has showed his respect for the Royal British Legion by running 51km over three days to support the armed forces charity.

Cllr Max Woodvine, who represents Saddleworth South, completed 71,544 steps and the equivalence to 501m of elevation gain.

He did the gruelling challenge to support the cause, which he recognises works "tirelessly" to help people in a range of situations such as those who are isolated from family, facing homelessness, struggling to feed their family or stuck in a financial crisis.

Cllr Woodvine, who is also leader of the Conservatives group on the parish council, has set up a crowdfunding page alongside finishing his challenge with the money amassed from it to be donated to the Royal British Legion.

The effort comes as Remembrance Sunday approached on November 14.

He said: “Over 90,000 people, with life changing or life limiting situations, turn to the Royal British Legion for help every year so I did this to fundraise for those in the Armed Forces community.

“Veterans can feel isolated and alone but they deserve to lead dignified and fulfilled lives which the Legion helps them to do.

"It also provides vital support to serving personnel when they leave the armed forces and decide to return to the civilian lifestyle, which can be difficult and daunting.”

Cllr Woodvine added that more than ever in the last year the most vulnerable in society have suffered due to isolation amid coronavirus restrictions and the challenges faced by the pandemic.
