FALLEN heroes will be honoured in services across the borough on Remembrance Sunday.

There will be 11 services held across districts in Oldham on Sunday, November 14 in conjunction with branches of the Royal British Legion.

Residents, uniformed services and representatives of organisations are urged to attend the services with the council looking forward to welcoming more people to the annual honourary events, which were scaled back last year due to the pandemic.

The services give the opportunity for people to commemorate the contribution of servicemen and women who have served their country.

Oldham Council leader, Cllr Arooj Shah, said: “It was with a heavy heart that we had to limit attendees at last year’s Remembrance Sunday services in order to protect the health of everyone in the borough but especially the vulnerable in our community, including our older veterans.

“Our residents have the deepest respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our peace and freedom and it’s important the day that is marked.”

Retired Sergeant Major Andy Thorpe, Royal British Legion member, Shaw and Crompton Branch, said: “It’s great that many of us are able to come together as a community this year to pay tribute to the servicemen and women who have given so much, as well as all of those who have been affected by armed conflict. As one community we stand together to say: we remember.

“Please continue to support the Royal British Legion’s annual campaign and wear a poppy with pride.”

Residents are invited to contribute to the Poppy Appeal, and donations can be made through the Poppy Appeal website.
