A RED plaque has been put up on display in Manchester in memory of a Tameside firefighter who died after a blaze in Denton 49 years ago.

Wilfred McLaughlan died from his injuries from a fire at the former Oldham Batteries site in 1972.

A Fire Brigades Union Manchester spokesman added: "Thanks go to the staff at the centre who made the event very special for all who attended, which included pump crews from Hyde and Phillips Park (his home station), past and present Firefighters and members

"Labour Party MP for Denton and Reddish Andrew Gwynne, mayor of Tameside Denise Ward, regional Fire Brigades Union Secretary Ed Burrows, Manchester FBU Brigade secretary Steve Wiswell, ACFO Carlos Meakin on behalf of Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service along with interested members of the public.

"We are already planning a number of plaques to honour fallen firefighters in 2022.
