A DEVELOPMENT to build a new £5m Hindu temple in Oldham has taken a step forward after the project's main contractor has completed the outside shell and core of the site.

The external areas of the Shree Swaminarayan Temple on Copsterhill Road has now been finished by Trafford Park-based RECOM Solutions.

Site remediation and groundworks, specialist stonework and brickwork as well as roofing have been completed by RECOM, which was appointed as the main contractor in November 2019 to work with the design team.

The temple’s design is a blend of modern and traditional features, including a solid marble gate and traditional Hindu temple domes that are being handcrafted in India and shipped over.

Built on the site of a former housing association depot, the temple is set to feature a spacious and naturally-lit modern prayer hall, space for sports, events and teaching, a courtyard with landscaped gardens, parking and accommodation

Work began at the site in July 2020 and is due to be completed this summer.

RECOM’s team working on the project has been led by director Jason McKnight alongside Josh Marrs and Jordan Stent.

It is being funded through donations from the community and supporters from across the UK and overseas.

Jason McKnight said: “RECOM initially became involved with the scheme in November 2019 to further develop cost efficiency and buildability, in tandem with the design team, prior to starting on site.

“This unique project is a standout scheme in the north west.

"Having handed over the site following the completion of RECOM’s portion of the works, the community is now able to undertake the completion of the internal fit out.

“We are thrilled with the outcome and we are delighted to have been involved with a community that will appreciate the project for generations to come.”

After work started two years ago, Suresh Gorasia, speaking on behalf of the temple, said: “Thanks to the generous support we have received from the local community and our parent body, we can now realise our dream for the new temple.

"The temple lies at the heart of our community. For many, it is an extension of their home, a place for worship, culture, socialising and recreation.

“Our priority is to create a new temple that is outstanding, blending contemporary design with traditional Hindu temple features that will ensure it becomes a landmark building."
