RESIDENTS have spoken out over a road littered with potholes which has been labelled an "absolute disgrace".

Lime Grove has "multiple potholes, crumbling of the road surface" and "poorly completed repairs", residents have told Conservative councillor Dave Arnott.

People contacting him about the problems are worried about damage being caused to their cars due to the state of the road, the Royton North representative said.

Cllr Arnott has written to Oldham Council "asking for urgent action" to "address the condition" of the road.

He said: “I have been contacted by residents who are frankly fed up with the shocking state of the road surface on Lime Grove, off Fir Lane.

"Residents have highlighted multiple potholes, crumbling of the road surface, poorly completed repairs and serious concerns about damage to their cars, simply getting to and leaving their homes.”

At the weekend, Cllr Arnott went to see the state of the road and understands why residents have been contacted him about the problem.

He has asked for an "urgent meeting" to be called to discuss the problem.

Cllr Arnott added: “I visited Lime Grove on Saturday, and frankly, the condition of the road surface along most of the grove is an absolute disgrace.

"I have written to the relevant department at Oldham Council requesting an urgent meeting to address this issue.

"Residents in Royton pay some of the highest council tax rates in the country and they deserve a lot better than this.”

In response, deputy council leader and cabinet member for neighbourhoods, Cllr Amanda Chadderton, said: "Lime Grove is a small cul de sac and is typical of many roads across Oldham.

"Following over 10 years of austerity, we know that potholes nationally are a major problem and across Greater Manchester councils we are all prioritising the busy roads which bear the brunt of cars, buses and lorries.

"Despite the Conservative government not giving us what we need to fully maintain our roads, the last five years has seen an extra £22m from Oldham Council’s own limited funds.

"We are aware of the deteriorating condition of the highway on Lime Grove and since 2018 have increased the number of safety inspections to continually assess its condition. Nearby, we have also recently resurfaced Dogford Road and made significant improvements to Fir Lane.

"We look forward to the support of Cllr Arnott and his colleagues in the forthcoming council budget proposals which will include additional funding from Oldham Council to meet the continued shortfall in highways repairs money as the Government continue to gives us less than we need."
