H&M will become the latest store to close it's branch in Spindles Shopping Centre after this week with the store set to close on Sunday.

The store becomes the latest brand to close it's store in the shopping centre, following the high profile closures of Debenhams and TJ Hughes.

Now, H&M will close their branch as plans continue to redevelop the shopping centre and Tommyfield Market.

In a statement sent to The Oldham Times, H&M said: "H&M Spindles Shopping Centre in Oldham will close on February 6.

"At H&M we continuously review our store portfolio, the decision to close this particular store was part of the long-term strategy to ensure we are offering our customers the best possible shopping experience in the right locations."

It comes as plans for the redevelopment of the town centre takes more steps towards completion.

The Spindles Town Square Shopping Centre is set to be revamped to make way for "better shops, new space for work and an improved leisure and entertainment offer" as part of the plans which have been proposed by the council.

The former site of TJ Hughes will be be knocked down to make way for the new home of Tommyfield Market.

The market's current location is set to be replaced by a new park.

Part of the proposals said: "[The] redevelopment of Spindles will enable the high street to adapt to changing circumstances and market demand, promoting the long-term sustainability of Oldham."

The proposals, which were approved in January, also said the loss of high street names in Oldham was due to the "national fundamental shift in retail habits".

The reaction to the plans has been very mixed amongst residents. Some have previously said another park in the town centre is unnecessary, while others have argued another green space could only be a positive.
