Plans for the redevelopment of Spindles Shopping Centre have taken a step forward as the planning application has officially been submitted.

The plans show the proposed new location for Tommyfield Market and a look at new public spaces for dining, working and socialising.

This includes a new events space that will be built above the new market, which will occupy the area where TJ Hughes was based.

Oldham Council leader Arooj Shah said: "This is an exciting milestone in making this project a reality, and I'm so glad that we'll soon be seeing work taking place."

Cllr Shah explained how the plans had been driven by feedback they had receieved.

She said: "You also gave us ideas for how you would like to use Spindles and its new venues in the future."

The plans will see the area which was TJ Hughes knocked down and house Tommyfield Market.

This will be an extension of Spindles that will extend into Parliament Square. Planning permission to demolish this space was granted in January and work will begin in the summer.

There will also be a new events space built above the new market which will be purposed for private and public functions.

The plans also include the creation of a new entrance to the relocated split-level market with a food court connecting to Parliament Square and a dedicated retail market linking to the shopping mall.

While the ground floor of Spindles will be a dedicated retail area, the upper floor will look to offer an office space for local businesses and Oldham Council services.

The council has said the shopping centre will remain open during the redevelopment as they look to have the work completed by the end of 2023.
