A campaign looking to tackle violence amongst young people in Greater Manchester has included several youths who attend Oldham Boxing.

Two boys from Oldham have taken part in the I Am Greater campaign that looks to persuade children in Greater Manchester not to take part in violence.

Danish and Gerry are both included in a video as part of the campaign, launched by the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit.

Violence and crime amongst youths in Greater Manchester has been increasing in recent years, with many stabbings taking place.

In the video, both boys explain how choosing to dedicate their time to boxing and being in the gym has proved a better alternative than following a violent path.

Danish says: "I could have easily been a part of the streets, messing about, but I think it's the wrong way to go.

"I chose the gym instead."

Gerry says: "I came to boxing and I just learnt to be disciplined and control the anger."

Danish says that boxing is "the best way to stay off the streets in my opinion".

In the video, the two boys are seen entering Oldham Boxing, based on Greaves Street in central Oldham.

Other people in the campaign who have used the boxing gym as a way to get away from violence include Hamelton and Naomi.

Hamelton, 22, arrived in the UK from Portugal when he was 14 and admits he fell in with the wrong crowd as he tried to fit in.

In his video, he says if he had not have found boxing, he would be on "the wrong path doing the wrong things".

Naomi says in her video that boxing is "a safe haven because you can set your mind on something different".

The campaign aims to get young people in the city region to walk away from violence and find other outlets.
