With the Oldham Beer Festival back after three years, many Oldhamers have been reminiscing about their favourite pubs – former and current.

We asked readers where they had their first pints – and got some interesting answers, so we took a look at what has happened to the establishments since.

The Bay

Commenter Jim Ohalloran said: “The Bay Horse. Wickentree Lane, Failsworth. They wouldn’t serve me across the road in the Anglers.”

The two pubs are still standing opposite from one another today.

Roxy Cinema

Steve Appleby said: “Roxy cinema upstairs bar aged 12, OB bottle.”

The cinema opened in 1937. It was shut down in 2005 and demolished two years later.

Star Inn

Steve Needham said: “Star Inn - now flats. Then moved to Shepherds Boy, soon to be flats. Then Gardeners Arms, now a house.”

The Star Inn was located very close to the current Oldham King Street Metrolink stop.

The building that stands there now still serves up food and drink – though fried chicken is the main attraction, rather than pints.

The Abbey

Paul Tonks said: “The Abbey. West St. From Oldham college one evening.”

The Abbey, demolished in 2014, was located near to where the Oldham Leisure Centre now stands.

The Hathershaw

Jannice Brown recalled her first pint at The Hathershaw on Ashton Road – also since closed down.
