A large cordon remains in place in Preston City centre following a major fire.

Twelve fire engines battled a huge blaze on Church Street, Preston overnight (Thursday May 18). 

The fire service said the incident had been has been brought under control however firefighting operations continue this morning with eight fire engines and an aerial ladder platform remaining at the incident.

The fire which could be seen across parts of the city ripped through a building in the city centre. Crews were still tackling parts of the blaze at former Odeon cinema and Tokyo Jo’s which are derelict. 

Speaking last night Incident Commander, Area Manager Neil Taylor said: “It is a large incident which is approximately 90 metres by 30 metres in size. Parts of the building are derelict and some of the areas more to the front of Church Street are still in use as commercial premises.”

A Lancashire police spokesperson said: “We are assisting Lancashire Fire and Rescue with an on going fire in Preston Town Centre.

“This will be on going for sometimes. We appreciate your patience during this and please ask that you find alternative routes when travelling this morning.  we will update you in due course, Thank you.”
