Neighbourhood police officers are warning people over the dangers of campfires.

It comes after police discovered the remnants of a large fire in woodlands near Burnley.

PC Mark Hill said: “I have been out and about in Hurstwood doing a walk around after being made aware by a partner agency that it appears that campfires have been set up and fires have been started over the last weekend as you can see from the photos.

“Thankfully it appears that the fires have not spread on this occasion but it just shows how easy it is for fires to spread and the serious devastation that it can cause to the woodlands.

“There is a list of things re what you need to do if you see or come across someone starting or setting up a campfire. Coming across this is worrying due to what impact this could cause to the countryside.

“This area is going to be continued to be patrolled not only by the police but by other agency as well to make sure that this kind of thing is not happening.

“Please let ourselves and the fire service know if you see anything.”
