An Oldham teacher has been shortlisted for Teacher of the Year at an annual awards ceremony to be held in the House of Lords.

Dr Richard Lee, Assistant Principal and English teacher at Oldham Sixth Form College (OSFC), has been placed on the final shortlist in the Teacher of the Year category at the Student Social Mobility Awards.

The award recognises ‘a teacher who has gone above and beyond, making a significant contribution to broadening career horizons, boosting aspirations or facilitating the future success of students from less advantaged backgrounds.’

Dr Lee has been shortlisted for his role in launching an English Literature strand of Oxford University’s OxNet programme in 2021 – where he has delivered Zoom classes on postcolonial literature to state school sixth form students around the country.

The tutorials have led to more students applying to study English at university.

Dr Lee also runs the Sixth Form College’s programme to support students who want to apply to Oxford or Cambridge.

Dr Lee said: “It’s great to be shortlisted for this award which, although in my name, really recognises the amazing commitment of the students involved and the support of my wonderful colleagues.

“It’s definitely a team effort. OSFC is committed to transforming the lives of all our students and our work with high achievers is one successful part of this.”

The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 21 in the House of Lords.

The judging panel for the awards comprises 10 leading individuals from academia, education, and business.
